Year Five Update

June 2009

Dear Parents and Guardians

It has been great to see such a positive response to our Year 5 program this semester, with many of you offering your assistance in the implementation of our programs.

Space Night “went like a rocket”, with all students eager to share their carefully researched new knowledge with family and peers. This term’s Media unit has also been enthusiastically received by our students, who are currently presenting their Media personality profiles to their classmates.

The individualised nature of students’ topics of choice, ensure that a broad coverage of information has been communicated from student to students during presentation and questioning sessions. In this way, students learn from each other, and develop their self confidence, communication and interpersonal skills.

Congratulations to all students for their effort and persistence during a very busy term which has included NAPLAN, ICAS and school based formal assessment programs.

It is interesting to see the spread of interests and abilities within our group this year. We are currently planning a program for Term 3 which continues to provide opportunities for all students to achieve and progress along their learning pathway, revisiting concepts where necessary.

CAMP

Next Term we will be studying “Our Golden Past”. As a component of this unit of work, we will be visiting Sovereign Hill for our camping program. At this venue, students will be required to dress in costume of the day, which will be provided, and conduct themselves in accordance with school rules applicable to the mid 1800’s. This can be a sobering situation for some but enjoyed by all.

Please be aware that all students attending the Sovereign Hill camp will be required to wear plain brown or black leather shoes as would have been worn by students during the gold rush era.

BIKE EDUCATION

Later this year, in fourth term, the Grade 5’s will be participating in our Bike Education program. This involves many theoretical and practical aspects of riding a bike and obeying the road rules. In the past, this has proven to be a popular and important program for the Grade 5’s. More details of this exciting program will be available at the end of next term.

Please note that before a student can participate in this program, they must have a road worthy bike. Please plan for your child to either own, or have unlimited use of, a roadworthy suitably sized bicycle for the duration of the Bike Ed program. If you have any questions regarding Bike Ed, please contact your child’s teacher.

In closing, we look forward to meeting with you once again during the first week of Term 3 at your allocated interview time on either Tuesday July 14th or Thursday July 16th.

Please contact your child’s teacher, if you have not yet made an appointment, so that a suitable arrangement can be made.
